The Path Towards PGI Recognition for Torre del Greco’s Coral and Cameo
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is an official recognition by the European Union that protects products whose qualities, characteristics, or reputation are closely linked to their geographical origin.
Traditionally reserved for the agri-food sector, since 2023 the new EU Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 has extended the possibility of obtaining PGI designation to artisanal and industrial products, thus enhancing local knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, and the cultural heritage that define Europe’s regional identities.
Within this new regulatory framework, the Coral and Cameo Consortium of Torre del Greco was among the first entities in Italy to take action, with the goal of officially recognizing the unique and enduring bond between Torre del Greco and its centuries-old artisanal craftsmanship.
Since its establishment on September 2, 2024, the Consortium has identified the PGI pathway as a strategic priority for the protection and promotion of the sector.
In less than a year, the Consortium has drafted two technical specifications in preparation for the official PGI application:
one dedicated to Torre del Greco’s Worked Coral,
and one to Torre del Greco’s Engraved Cameo.
These documents precisely define the origin of raw materials, production techniques, quality requirements, and the distinctive features that make Torre del Greco’s creations unique worldwide.
The goal is to ensure traceability, authenticity, and preservation of tradition, offering consumers the confidence of purchasing an artisanal product genuinely tied to its place of origin.
The PGI recognition represents not only a mark of quality, but also a means of protecting the cultural and productive heritage of Torre del Greco.
Through this initiative, the Consortium aims to:
protect Torre del Greco’s artisanal production from imitation and counterfeiting,
promote the cultural identity and “know-how” handed down through generations,
and strengthen the sector’s presence in both national and international markets.
At the same time, the Consortium collaborates with institutions, research bodies, and industry organizations to foster sustainability across the supply chain and to develop communication and promotion strategies aligned with European standards.
The process of obtaining PGI recognition is a complex and rigorous journey, yet it represents an extraordinary opportunity to give Torre del Greco’s coral and cameo craftsmanship the place it deserves in the European landscape of high-quality artisan production.
The Coral and Cameo Consortium of Torre del Greco continues to work with dedication so that the name Torre del Greco becomes a protected symbol of artisanal excellence — a guarantee for creators, artisans, and all who cherish these timeless works of art.
